WOMEN WALK THE WORLD
On or around ACWW day, 29th April, people throughout the world are encouraged to take part in “Walk the World for ACWW”, the aim being to promote the work of ACWW and raise funds.
What is ACWW? The acronym stands for Associated Country Women of the World. ACWW is comprised of women-led societies and groups throughout the world working collectively to offer support, friendship and practical help to women and communities worldwide.
Nationally the WI is a member of ACWW and many WIs support their work by collecting “Pennies for Friendship” where small denomination coins are brought to WI meetings by members.
This year a group from Woolavington WI decided to support the “Walk the World” event and chose Saturday May 7th as the most convenient date. Well, needless to say we didn't exactly walk the world but we did have a grand saunter along Burnham seafront on a mostly sunny day with a warm breeze blowing. After admiring the newly restored Marine Cove we visited the historic parish church of St Andrew whose list almost rivals the leaning tower of Pisa. All this activity necessitated a restorative cup of tea to be partaken at the Crafty Teacup café before we walked back.
Every year millions die from water-related illnesses and in many developing countries women and children in rural areas spend much of the day collecting water. Our fund-raising on the walk took the form of a donation for each tap in our homes. We were surprised at how many we had. It was felt an excellent way to draw attention to ACWW's Water for All programme which aims to provide rural communities with clean drinking water, essential sanitation and crop irrigation.
£26 was collected by members for ACWW and sent to Eileen Hurd ACWW representative.
