A few years ago we lightened proceedings with “Speed Dating for Seniors” aka Getting to Know Your Fellow Members. This year it was the committee under the spotlight, with Guess the Child Photo, (they all looked very sweet) and fascinating facts from their past. Who knew so many had had close encounters with the Royals; one even being a stand-in for Princess Margaret. Imagine being a bridesmaid eleven times between the ages of 3 and 15; helping Jane Fonda find the bathroom; having your 15 minutes of fame on ITV or helping deliver a friend's baby in your bedroom when she only popped over for a cuppa. Not to mention the tale of a romantic tryst ending in a hurried escape from the balcony which was not without consequences!
The business part of the meeting was swiftly concluded. All committee members and Teresa as president were re-elected for the coming year and the secretary reported on the various activities and events of the past year. The President’s cup was awarded to Jean Manning, a relatively new member, in recognition of the contribution she had made to WI over a short space of time.
After refreshments there was time for some light-hearted entertainment from the floor. Mo opened with a short reading entitled “The Gift”, followed by Jean's poem about the WI and all it had given her. Corena made us laugh with Pam Ayres “Surgically Enhanced” and extolled the virtues of The Wonderbra. Mo gave us Joyce Grenfell's Old Tyme Dancing and lastly Teresa attempted to teach some brave volunteers how to belly dance.
After which it was time to bid farewell and depart with a smile.
June's meeting is our Party celebrating our 75th Birthday and Somerset County Federation Centenary, attendance by invitation only. July we shall be trying our hands at Scarf Tying with Janet MacNeil.
Visitors are always welcome. We are a friendly bunch who have a lot of fun. We meet on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 7.30 in the Village Hall, except for August when we visit Torquay for the annual outing. Come and see us. There may be some seats left.
