WOOLAVINGTON WI NOVEMBER MEETING 2017
Members were greeted by the sight of tables laid with tablecloths, each decorated with a pretty pot of flowers and party poppers, which told them this was to be a rather special evening.
After Jerusalem Teresa introduced our speaker Alan from Dementia Friends who made us aware of some of the myths and misconceptions about dementia using a matching sentences quiz. Dementia is a disease of the brain which Alan compared to a length of fairy lights, some of which were faulty. Dementia is not just about losing your memory; it can affect thinking, communicating, motor skills, sequencing, inhibition, distance judging and carrying our everyday tasks.
For instance many dementia sufferers have vision problems and to them a black mat at the door of a shop can appear to be a hole in the ground
Dementia Friends was set up to help people to understand what it is like to live with dementia and to change the way people think, act and talk about it. Alan was an interesting and engaging speaker, giving us an insight into the dementia world and much food for thought.
A short business meeting followed. Members viewed the photo of the magnificent collection of 12 shoe boxes which they had filled for the YMCA Christmas appeal. Also on show was the plaque to appear on the bench which our WI are purchasing for the benefit of the village celebrating the 75th anniversary of Woolavington WI in conjunction with the centenary of Somerset Federation. Alongside these were President Teresa Hemms awards, the Judges Calendar Cup and Certificate for her 2018 Calendar winning entry and her WI Adviser Certificate on completing her training.
Refreshment time made the reason for the decorated tables clear. One of our long standing members Eva, having generously supplied a finger buffet, with wine and non alcoholic drink to celebrate her recent 90th birthday. Eva said she had received much fellowship and help during her 30 years in Woolavington WI, especially over the past 15 years, for which she wanted to say thank you. Daughter Jeanette was kept busy ensuring glasses and plates were kept replenished.
Teresa thanked Eva for her kindness as did the members.
