Woolavington WI Meeting Report February 21st 2017
Emma Duke's topic was Driftwood, Emma is passionate about her subject, Driftwood is collected by her from the Bristol Channel areas, St Audries Bay, Porlock and Kilve Quantock Head. Emma talked enthusiastically and knowledgeably about all her pieces and there origins, many deposited and shaped by natural erosion then washed up on beaches, other wood comes from Shipwrecks and Boatyards.
We were shown some rather strange shaped pieces of wood that in there own way were oddly beautiful. The patina that several pieces had developed from being handled, encourages you to stroke and polish them more, Emma is happy for you to do this..
I'm sure when we next visit the beach we will be walking with our heads down looking for pieces of Oak, Maple, Ash or weirdly shaped tree roots.
Perhaps be lucky enough to find one or more of the 18th century Gold coins. A shipwreck in 1796 when 4 chests were recovered, but one was lost, Gold coins are reputed to dwell in the remaining treasure chest under the Bristol Channel, some were found 1978 by people digging in the sand … so who knows.
