Meeting Report - April 2013
At our April meeting we enjoyed an excellent talk by Maggie Pope entitled “What is herbal medicine: quackery or cure?” After successfully using a teabag to cure her son’s sore eye, she decided to study for a B.Sc.Hons in herbal medicine and was surprised at what a complex subject it is with many of her studies overlapping with conventional medical training. Maggie described how she makes her own creams and talked of many of the plants used in her cures, e.g. camomile, elderflower, bark, rose, burdock - the list was extensive. She also described a couple of case histories in which herbal medicine had proved to be very effective. She does take groups on countryside walks looking for suitable plants to use, especially for her own spring tonic which is made from cleaver and nettles.
This was followed by a short business meeting during which we heard several reports: earlier in the day a group had attended a W.I. Roadshow at East Huntspill and the previous week we attended a Group Meeting at Compton Dundon where we were entertained by a belly dancer! Kerry told us about a successful computer training session held at the village hall and the evening finished with Barbara describing her sugar craft course.
Ten members visited the Enigma Pottery at Frome where they were taught how to make and decorate their own pots. Afterwards tea was served using a homemade tea service and everyone enjoyed homemade scones and jam with plenty of clotted cream! There were many beautiful items on display in the house and shop and everyone is looking forward to receiving their own pot once it has been baked.
