Flaming June?
Woolavington WI held their June Jubilee meeting not outside in the lovely garden kindly offered to them by a member but, because of the wet and chilly weather, inside the Village Hall once again.
Committee members (and one willing husband) worked such magic as they were able to transform the space inside the main hall with strings of newly-made bunting in WI colours of green and white, together with Union Flags, red, white and blue balloons, bows and paperchains. At the appointed time 31 members and 2 guests arrived bearing food both savoury and sweet which quickly covered the awaiting tables.
Lynne the President welcomed everyone by offering her own version of Pimms. May was presented with a small gift in thanks for her very kind offer of the use of her garden – maybe next year?
Long-standing member Betty H was presented with a card and chocolates as a ‘thank you’ for all her efforts over the years, many of them on the Committee, helping with refreshments, raffles and the dreaded washing up! Betty is moving away to be nearer her family and we shall miss her but wish her well.
Lynne gave out copies of a royal quiz to be attempted throughout the evening, as everyone helped themselves to the food.
Fourteen members had entered their names in the draw for the Woolavington WI Bursary. Last year’s winner Kerry made the draw, with the winner being a delighted Barbara.
A competition for Royal memorabilia had created a small but most interesting display. The winner was a very delicate commemorative Coronation cup and saucer belonging to Hilary. In second place were 2 very different bone china mugs belonging to Shirley S, one from 1911 and one from 1992 - our Queen’s Ruby anniversary - and third was Mo’s Silver Jubilee teaspoon.
The clear winner of the quiz was Jan, who won a large‘Olympic’ chocolate medal, and the evening was rounded off by a larger than usual Jubilee-themed raffle.
