Meeting Report - March 2012
The Spring Group Meeting of the Polden Hills Group of WIs was held this March in Woolavington Village Hall. Approximately 70 members from across the 7 groups heard a most entertaining talk by Sarah Maude on “An Evening with the Stars”, about her amazing life amongst theatrical folk.
After a supper of ploughman’s lunch and a variety of puddings provided by the hosts, Woolavington WI, the entertainment by the”Woolavington Wonders” was a skit and sing-along on the theme of a day out. Outgoing Group Co-ordinator Janice from Walton was presented with an orchid and signed card in thanks for all her efforts over the past 6 years, and Corena from Woolavington was welcomed as her successor.
Woolavington WI’s March meeting was attended by 35 members and 2 visitors. Once the business had been attended to, speaker Carl Sadler from Malmesbury set out his tools and wares as he explained his background as a coppice woodsman, making hurdles, trugs and besoms which he exhibits and sell at agricultural shows all over the country.
Carl made a trug while we watched. The handle is made from hazel or ash which has been cut in winter when the sap is low, and the base from overlapping – clinker-built – thin white willow. He showed how the willow is curved by hand, after brief immersion in a milk churn full of boiling water, and then fastened using copper nails, because Iron nails would be rotted by the tannic acid. He and his skills have been used extensively in several films including the recent War Horse.
The competition for a decorated wooden spoon was won by a tiny dark wood salt shovel belonging to Lynne; the second placed was Carolyn’s mixing spoon decorated with helichrysum with coloured raffia, and third an Anniversary gift spoon with pale pink and silver decoration belonging to Shirley.
