WI Meeting Report October 2013
Acting President Corena Mundell opened the meeting by welcoming several visitors and new members.
Libby Sidall was an excellent speaker who kept us amused with her humorous asides whilst exhibiting an amazing capacity for multitasking as she combined dexterity in her demonstration with fluency in explanation resulting in the creation of some attractive foliage arrangements suitable for Christmas.
She began by laying out greenery such as leylandii, laurel, acer, variegated holly, varieties of ivy and old man's beard from a seemingly bottomless bag, all of which had been garnered from the hedgerow or local gardens. Rather than following the florist's rule of working in odd numbers, Libby prefers symmetry in her arrangements and, based on a flat backed bouquet design of three yew branches, proceeded to make a door hanging containing layers of laurel, ivy, acer, holly and ivy. This in itself was a pleasing item but a stunning result was achieved with the addition of a wired ribbon bow, pine cones and a glittering angel.
Two further designs were created, a Christmas wreath and a table decoration. Libby's talk and demonstration was entitled “Christmas crafts to do at home” and it was obvious that she had inspired us as several people were seen to be buying some basics and embellishments from the range she had brought along to tempt us. No doubt there will be some splendid examples created by our “crafty members” to adorn their homes this Christmas.
A fun and instructive evening – no wonder Libby is in such demand
