POLDEN GROUP WI CHRISTMAS CONCERT
“all the world's a stage”
After the welcome, given by Liz in the absence of Group Chair Corena, who was away on holiday, Jerusalem was sung in the usual hearty fashion. A minutes silence was then held as a mark of respect and appreciation of Janice Davies, a long time member of Walton WI who had sadly passed away in September. Janice was widely known and loved in the Group, serving as Secretary for many years.
Puriton opened the proceedings with their inventive version of Catchphrase for which audience participation was required. Free ball point pens made sure no one had any excuse for not filling in the answers to the 21 phrases depicted by members in costume. I especially liked “The Archers”.
Middlezoy were on next with an ingenius one-liner version of Aladdin in which the cast of seven sat in a row sporting colourful headgear to identify their characters.
Shapwick entertained with the youngest and a (slightly!) older member reading an original poem in which a long-standing WI member was encouraging the newbie to join up. Of course she was eventually persuaded to join “Shapwick Lovely Ladies”.
Woolavington followed with their version of “Hinge and Bracket” in which “the ladies” had a lot of fun with conversation and some songs.
Compton Dundon gave us Cinderella with a reduced cast of just five who had the audience laughing. Poor Cinderella's lines seemed to consist almost entirely of “al-right” to the point where our anticipation inspired the audience to join in!
Weston Zoyland commemorated the Great Fire of London with their 1666 sketch, cleverly setting the scene with a tour guide talking to a group about the sights of London. This proceeded to the singing of “London's Burning” with placards to help with the words.
Walton finished the entertainment with the Richard Stilgoe and Peter Skellern musical version of Calendar girls, suitably dedicated to Janice who had written to Richard some years ago asking for permission to perform it.
Another fun evening displaying the talents of the various WIs who make up the Polden Group. You never fail us ladies. Well done!
Seasonal refreshments of mince pies and shortbread biscuits, tea and coffee were supplied by our hostesses at Walton.
