WOOLAVINGTON WI SEPTEMBER MEETING 2017
Unfortunately our expected speaker Yvonne had been taken ill so was unable to attend; we wish her a speedy recovery.
However we were well entertained by the dynamic duo of long-standing WI members
Veronica Andrews and Sheena Holloway, who in true WI spirit came at very short notice to tell us about their experience of being contestants on Bargain Hunt.
Veronica and Sheena were excellent raconteurs as well as best friends and the byplay between them was reminiscent of Hinge and Bracket.
Their adventure began with the filling in of a questionnaire in March 2011, followed by an audition at the BBC studios in White Ladies Road Bristol at which they chose the team colour. As Veronica's father had been goalkeeper for Arsenal it had to be red.
We examined the fleeces and found that they were rather large and heavy with secret pockets to accommodate the microphone equipment for the contestants.
For filming day they were required to be at the Bath and West show ground at 7.30 where they were partnered by expert Philip Serrell, described by Veronica as a genial teddy bear! The opposing team were Girl Guides, whom they did not meet at this stage. Unknown to Veronica and Sheena four friends had arranged to be at the show ground and took lots of photos for them as mementos.
The team choices were, a brass steam pump, a Windsor chair and a reproduction trivet such as would have been attached to a cottage wall. Phil's bonus buy was two glass eyes from the Napoleonic era, one slightly chipped and the other rather bloodshot!
Overall the red team made a profit of £45 and needless to say had a wonderful time.
A serendipitous last minute addition to our always varied programme, this was Veronica and Sheena's 59th talk, with 5 more already booked for next year
We also discovered the secret behind Philip's vast collection of colourful scarves. For further information come to our WI. We meet every 3rd Tuesday at 7.30 in Woolavington Village Hall where you will be made very welcome.
