Summer Outing 2012
Stratford upon Avon
Woolavington WI were extremely fortunate with the weather on this year's summer outing to Stratford-on-Avon. The coach filled with WI members, family and friends left the village just after 9am, most with macs and jackets“just in case” -the BBC weather forecast had predicted a heavy downpour at 3pm!
Two hours seemed to pass very quickly and we were set down in the visitor-friendly coach/car park,
just a few minutes from the picturesque river Avon and the bustling town. Well-used to catering for hordes of tourists, Stratford is simply full of refreshment possibilities of every description, from quaint cafes and tea rooms
and an ice cream barge, through French & Italian restaurants to literally dozens of pubs all offering food – reallly something to appeal to all tastes.
The open-top tourist bus is a great way to find your bearings, with an excellent commentary to explain what it is you’re seeing; whether or not you decide to hop off at any point, it does enable the visitor to decide what to look at in more detail, and in Stratford on Avon there’s no lack of choice, only of time to see it all in!
The Avon and its wide surrounding meadow offered the chance to relax on or off the water, and watch the world go by. There are varied walks to try, art works to admire, but the greatest attraction surely has to be the very beautiful historical architecture, quite apart from its famous connections! All this - and shops too for those who are so minded, means that to do the area justice, one day is simply not enough!
The party returned punctually, glad to sit and rest weary feet, and the return journey was soon accomplished, along with the now-customary raffle. Arriving back at the village hall shortly after 6pm, everyone declared it to have been a most successful day – and the BBC had got it wrong; Woolavington may have had a thunderstorm and downpour, but not Stratford on Avon!
